朱の深いかにの皮の美しさに惹かれてはじめたようだったが、次第にそれは単なる絵画的素材とかわり、そこには幻想的な空間のひろがりが構築されるようになった。西ヨーロッパをとびまわって風景を描いてきたが、そこには“かに”できたえた手法によるリズム感がただよい出している。（山本鼎記念館「丸山恒雄」『春陽会３人展パンフレット』, 1971）
Tsuneo Maruyama was attracted by the beauty of deep vermilion crab skin, but gradually this was replaced by mere pictorial material and a fantastic expanse of space was constructed. He has travelled around Western Europe painting landscapes, and the rhythm of the technique he developed with crabs is evident in his works. 自動車の１台もない水の都ベニスは予想以上に美しい街でした。隣に用に行くにもみなゴンドラという舟で行きます。昨日夕刻芸術の都フロレンスに着きました。この街は古代栄えた古い芸術品の多い街で、気候風土が非常に信州に似ています。ここの名物は皮製品です。お母さんの土産にハンドバッグを買いました。皆様に宜敷く。フロレンスにて 恒雄 １９６６年４月１５日
Venice, the water city without a single car, is even more beautiful than expected. Every time you go next door, you go by gondola, a boat. Yesterday evening I arrived in Florence, the capital of the arts. This is an ancient, prosperous city with many old works of art, and the climate is very similar to that of Shinshu.
