But how dark and sad are the paintings of Mr Maruyama in his 1950s. (the owner of Dahitsu-kan, Seeing the exhibition of Tsuneo Maruyama’s posthumous works Part II).
I still cannot forget the works with a heavy painting skin based on green at that time, and I strongly felt Tsuneo Maruyama’s sincerity and earnest youthfulness. (Yasuo Tanaka, ‘Tsuneo Maruyama-san’ Shunyo, No. 52, 10 March 1986)
Paul Klee, who pioneered the unique world of modern painting, wrote: ‘The artist’s work blossoms unconsciously into art… Painting has no special purpose. It has only one purpose: to make us happy. Painting is something completely separate from external life relations.’ These are meaningful words. (Yasuo Tanaka, ‘Tsuneo Maruyama,’ Nagano Prefecture Art Collection 7, The World of Western-style Painting Blooming in the Region)
Created in 1956. This silent world may have been inspired by Paul Klee. In addition to this painting, there are also Night Sea and Night Strings. In this series of works with strong abstraction, the images that were selected in the artist’s youthful spirit appear in the form of colours and shapes, and the abstract composition has a bipolarity that also looks at the figurative, and the deep contemplation has come to fruition beautifully.
